Observing the spectacular Sandhill Crane Migration through central Nebraska

Every year from mid-February through mid-April, over 500,000 sandhill cranes along with thousands of ducks and geese converge on the Platte River in Nebraska, forming one of the world's most spectacular wildlife displays. Tom has made it a yearly ritual to travel to the Mangelsen family cabin to witness the great crane migration. The courtship dance of the sandhill crane is one of Tom's favorite behaviors to observe. The Platte River Valley is the most important stop-over along the crane's annual migration. The river provides the perfect spot to rest and safely roost on the sandbars at night. The nearby agricultural fields and wet meadows offer an abundance of food and the nutrition that the birds need to reach their breeding grounds in good condition.

The Legacy Reserve Collection of Masterworks by Thomas D. Mangelsen

The Legacy Reserve Collection is a compilation of Mangelsen's Masterworks counted among the rarest and the best of the best.

The story starts back in 1975, when Mangelsen created his very first limited edition photograph. Tom decided to hold back his most valuable prints, numbered 1 to 20, so that one day as a career capstone they would be offered as part of a Legacy Reserve Collection. Many images featured in this collection have been sold out for more than a decade, which are complemented by recent masterworks destined to sell out in the future.

Now, collectors have the unique opportunity to acquire one of 20 numbers from Mangelsen's personal artist reserve, gaining membership in a rarefied club of fine art collectors.

Every image in Mangelsen’s portfolio has been taken in the wild under natural conditions; the result of his waiting for the “picture perfect moment” across decades and often in hostile conditions. Such a body of work can only be achieved by having a heightened sense of animal behavior, an uncanny feel for being able to read changing atmospherics in the environment, and patience. At a time when digital technology is, notoriously, reprogramming its users to have shorter attention spans, Mangelsen’s work stands as a testament to the rewards that can come to people who slow down their lives and wait for nature’s revelations to happen.
